Network Gaming
Network Gaming
Many people are on a network either at home or at work, because
of a new interest in network games, which have become popular in the past
year or so. Most of the new games that came out this year had multi-player
features built in. Networks such as the Internet give you high speeds, making
games very fun. Imagine playing your favorite game over a common 10 Mbit/s
network with a few friends, doesn't it sound fun? Along with networked gaming
comes a big demand for top of the line computers. One usually needs something
like a Pentium 133 and 16-32 megabytes of RAM to fulfil minimum requirements
for networked games. Demanding games like "Total Annihilation"
may need a Pentium 200 and 48 megabytes of RAM. Most people prefer Local
Area Network games over Internet gaming because it is faster. Multi-player
gaming is one of the most common uses of LANs.
After talking with game developers, I found that great efforts are made
to optimize the games, so that more commands and actions can be sent over
a low-bandwidth network. Many new, unoptimized games use too much bandwidth
on the Internet, causing lag and many people to play on a LAN. In some cities
there are places that one can go which have a high speed local network with
top of the line computers and 3d equipment. These places provide a choice
of multi-player games and many people pay to play.
In conclusion, multi-player games are extremely popular, and are stimulating
both the telecommunications and software industry. Networked games are challenging,
social, and most important of all, fun.
